Primera lección.
I am so excited! On tuesday, 29th of July, I will start my spanish lessons! Yay! I am really looking forward to learn a new language. I've had the thought for a little longer than a year but it took me until now to sign up for a real training course at a school here in Amsterdam. Apart from the few, yet important words like "guapo", "beso", "abrazo", "gracias" and "Bueons dias" I don't know anything about spanish. :-)
At school, many years ago, I did learn french (which I forgot for great parts again...) and the last language I learned was dutch. At the moment, I only speak german, english and dutch. But I figured it would be nice to be able to speak some basic spanish.
It regularly happens at work that spanish speakers ask simple questions which at the moment I cannot answer (yet). I also have some spanish speaking friends and even though they speak english it still would be nice to be able to do some basic talk to them in spanish.
So keep your fingers crossed and I hope I can rely on some of you for your assistance every once in a while ;-) And please be gentle with me and all the mistakes I will make in the beginning... I just hope I will be able to pick up a good pronunciation as that seems a very difficult part of the language to me. I hope I will have lots of opportunities to go to Spain and talk and listen to you guys down there, improving my spanish knowledge. Meanwhile, I will at least have different spanish blogs to follow as well as lots of beautiful spanish music to listen to which gives me plenty of opportunity to practice my language knowledge too.
Hopefully, in the future I can skip a look at google translator when I want to say things like "España, aquí yo vengo." :-D

Guido, I know exactly what you mean. My crash course in Dutch comes when I arrive on the 19th. Of course I am a typical American, so I only speak english. I'm doing a self teach course, and I have discovered that what I hear, what I hear myself say, and what I say, are three completely different things. Jörg is the one I feel sorry for - he is most likely unaware of how capable I am of butchering this language.
..btw. I do look forward to meeting you when I arrive on the 19th of August.

Hi James,
let me first thank you so much for your comment, I am always happy to notice someone is actually reading here... hahaha :-)
I can also imagine your situation right now, knowing how difficult self learning courses are even if you are motivated as much as you are. Dutch is not really difficult I think however it's important to hear the pronunciation. For me it was very helpful to listen endlessly to dutch pop music. I was lucky enough to receive many cd's from my Jelle before I came here and listening to the music at all times back in Germany made me familiar with the language. Maybe that trick might work for you too?
I now do the same with spanish. Besides going to the course (my self discipline is so bad that I had to force myself into a course...) I listen to the wonderful spanish pop music of which I received many many cd's from my beloved lilbro Dani! Yesterday, when he and Sera arrived, they even presented me with spanish SingStar version for the playstation3 so I can now sing along with the lyrics, isn't that great?!! I was just so afraid to sing in front of two native speakers... gosh... I ruined all the fun for poor Dani (who also sings impressively good)... oh well... I'll practice and I'll challenge him... ;-)
Anyway, lots of luck, fun and success with learning dutch. I'm very curious to hear the results! And yes, I'll be working on the 19th and most probably be able to meet you then, I do look forward to it, it'll be a pleasure!
Have a great weekend James, lots of hugs from Amsterdam,
Guido
¡Muchos ánimos! :D
